From the Bird’s Mouth, 2008–2009

10,000 U.S. pennies were melted using direct sunlight magnified through a 3 × 4 ft. (approx. 91 × 122 cm) Fresnel lens. The project was inspired by three nineteenth-century scientists who went blind while staring at the sun in an attempt to better understand retinal afterimages.
